The Agricultural and Apiary Program provides education and homegrown organic food for our residents and staff.

We understand the strong connection between physical and emotional health. Sustaining a healthy Mediterranean diet and regular exercise has been shown to repair years of damage from addiction and neglect. Our comprehensive programming promotes the healthy lifestyle our residents need to achieve peace of mind, self-esteem, and overall wellness. Our main campus houses a large, enclosed organic garden and apiary with 16 bee hives.

Nutrition for Addiction Recovery

Our experienced chefs provide our residents with:

  • All daily meals and snacks for the entire length of stay
  • Group culinary sessions exploring healthy recipes, ingredient shopping, and cooking techniques
  • Outings to local farms and purveyors
  • Opportunities to participate in our organic raised bed garden program
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Aftercare planning including food budgeting and meal preparation
  • Binders with healthy and simple recipes created by our culinary staff

Culinary Enrichment Program

The community at the Manor of Hope is one of fellowship, support, and education. It is with these qualities in mind that we created the culinary enrichment program.

Oftentimes, our busy lifestyles force us to choose convenience over quality.   We live fast-paced, complicated lives, work long hours, and make compromises daily for the sake of saving a little time and getting it all in.  It’s important when possible, to slow down, and appreciate the special moments in life… to take stock of the good things we have been given… to choose quality over quantity… and to be in the moment.

It is the focus of the program to motivate, educate, and inspire our residents and staff to keep eating well and practice the self-rewarding craft of cooking.

Through extensive education, research, development, and execution, we have designed a program to actively include all residents to continue to make sound choices with regard to their food and nourishment. This continuing education is intended to strengthen and encourage each individual as they continue on their path of recovery.

Over the course of their residence, our culinary team will lead residents through a comprehensive, hands-on, practical meeting held one time per week.

Meetings can include, but are not limited to:

  • Cooking demonstrations in the Manor’s kitchen
  • Outings to local farms and purveyors
  • Planning and participation in the raised bed gardens
  • House meal and menu planning and execution.

Gathered in small groups with one-on-one attention,  we will build an educational base that residents can draw upon as they transition on their path to recovery.

The Manor of Hope provides its residents with a rich, educational, and rewarding environment to help strengthen the mind and body.  

Included in that design is a beautiful and thoughtfully engineered agricultural enrichment program.  Unique to the Manor of Hope, our enclosed raised bed gardens are the vehicle that provides our residents with the learning opportunity and responsibility of gardening and food supply.   Substantial efforts have been put forth to create 14 gardens that encircle a comfortable and peaceful sitting area, offering a quiet retreat with nature at its best.

Our residents learn about the responsibility of gardening and food supply under the guidance of the culinary team.

Residents learn and practice:

  • Responsibility, patience, and a sense of accomplishment through tending to plants and animals.
  • Sustainable agricultural practices and environmental stewardship.
  • Building a connection with nature.
  • The therapeutic benefits of outdoor activities.
  • Entrepreneurial skills through marketing and selling our honey products.
  • Values such as planning, maintenance, routine, and reward.

 As spring shows us signs of its impending arrival, the staff and residents are excited to plan and execute this project, beginning with the enrichment of the beds with nourishing organic compost.

We have a wonderful partner who has been assisting the Manor of Hope in the planning and execution of our organic gardens. We support local businesses in the area and Bing Houston at Stony Hill Farm in Coventry, PA has been one of them. Drawing on the experience and expertise of our friends at Stony Hill Farm, we are working together to build the gardens, establish a planting schedule, and tend to the process throughout the growing seasons.

While gardening on this scale does provide our residents with a great deal of outside time and physical activity, it also reinforces the values supported by the Manor of Hope program… planning, maintenance, routine, and reward.

We look forward to the weeks and months ahead and are thankful for the opportunity to live and work in an environment that allows us to enjoy this resource and the bounty that life has to offer.

Our culinary team will take care to prepare meals with the food we have grown together, completing the cycle and giving us all a sense of reward, nourishment, and accomplishment.
