This year, we expanded our apiary with four new hives, giving us a total of six bee boxes.
The bee program provides our residents with the unique opportunity to learn about this important member of our ecosystem. The bees pollinate our garden and surroundings, and reward our care with honey! Mentored under the wing of our good friend Walt, we were able to remove comb and process our own raw honey! Every step along the way with Walt has been a welcomed learning experience, and we are most grateful for his experience, time, and patience.
We spent a pleasant Sunday afternoon processing our honey… removing the cell caps, spinning the frames in a large centrifuge, filtering, and bottling. We processed over 130 lbs of honey this season, and remain thankful for the opportunity to share this unique experience with our residents.
